Local Newspaper Launches New Feature to Highlight Everday Tallahassee Life
Tallahassee’s local newspaper, the Tallahassee Democrat, launched a new beat this week that will focus on what it’s like to live in our city. The beat, titled “You Are Here”, will appear twice a week in the Local News section and will be written by reporter Elizabeth Mack. Read below to find out more about the young professional covering these stories.
Meet the woman behind ‘Girl About Town’
“Tallahassee is a small town and there’s nothing to do.” That’s often the word on the street.
The statement may seem true if you are not looking for something to do. What I’ve learned is Tallahassee is a place with several different scenes. It is small, but with a big-city mentality.
There’s plenty to do. All you must do is find what is right for you.
Take me. I’ve been in Tallahassee since 2004. As a college student I spent many a day with my friends complaining that there was nothing to do here and when I graduated I was going to flee this place. However, here I am — a non-student resident for almost a year. I only discovered Tallahassee after I graduated from Florida A&M University in August 2009, and I have my job to thank for most of what I know about the city.
During my time here at the Tallahassee Democrat and conducting interviews at several widely popular local events, apparently many residents (including the lifelong, born-and-raised-here) have yet to discover Tallahassee either. Therefore, I pose the question: Do you know where you are?
A sense of place is important to have in any community. As a journalist it is my job to share that with you, so I’m extending my formal invitation to you, the Tallahassee community, to join me as I discover where it is I live and gain that sense of place.
As always, I’m open for suggestions, if there is anything you think I might find interesting, please feel free to shoot me an e-mail at emack@tallahassee.com or call me at (850) 599-2312.
