The mission of Illuminate Tallahassee is to use light and energy in creative and efficient ways leading to economic development and the expansion of arts and culture. This will ultimately inspire the creativity to showcase Tallahassee landmarks.
Illuminate Tallahassee seeks to illuminate buildings downtown to enhance the visual appeal of the urban core at night and will help promote the idea of an 18-hour downtown. In order to have a sustainable and affordable light source to illuminate downtown buildings, this community catalyst team will work with Florida State University to host a tri-state competition among colleges, universities and hobbyists to identify the most efficient power source for the illumination project. The competition will be held on Black Friday (November 26, 2010) in downtown Tallahassee. The exact location will be determined by the City of Tallahassee and the community catalyst team.
Exhibitors will create a display of their choosing using the least amount of power possible for the greatest output. A panel will evaluate the power source and the amount of light generated to determine a winner.
The community catalysts are currently outlining the criteria so that the winner’s power source would then be used to illuminate a downtown building.

Identify Tallahassee
Identify Tallahassee, formerly a part of the Illuminate Tallahassee initiative, aims to help reshape Tallahassee’s image as it focuses on the unique and historical places that make Tallahassee special. These community catalysts will engage the community in its efforts to preserve and enhance Tallahassee’s visual appeal through various art projects with a focus on Tallahassee’s urban core.
As part of an initiative to grow Tallahassee’s economy through an enhanced sense of place, the Identify Tallahassee project began in early 2010 with the goal of defining targeted districts in the urban core of the city as up and coming neighborhoods primed for development.
By recognizing these districts for their unique qualities and economic amenities, Identify Tallahassee aims to assist these developing districts in creating a sense of place while instilling civic pride in current and future residents. By collaborating with district stakeholders, Identify Tallahassee seeks to create district outlines that can be followed over time to keep district identities thriving.
Identify Tallahassee can assist district stakeholders in community organizing, idea implementation, fundraising, government relations, and resource sharing. Identify Tallahassee seeks to align community vision with realistic timelines and goals. Through collaboration with district businesses, residents, and stakeholders, Identify Tallahassee aims to nurture district identities within Florida’s Capital City.
