New FAMU Mural Honors Trailblazing Founder Dr. Sybil C. Mobley
KCCI’s team helped bring to life a vibrant new mural celebrating the legacy of Dr. Sybil C. Mobley. As founding dean of Florida A&M University’s School of Business and Industry (SBI) Dr. Mobley inspired many.
Located at the Florida SBDC at FAMU, 625 E. Tennessee Street, the mural honors Dr. Mobley’s visionary leadership and lasting impact on business education, entrepreneurship, and generations of students.
Created by professional muralist Myah Freeman, the artwork incorporates touches of FAMU’s signature orange and green, includes an inspirational quote from Dr. Mobley, and artistic interpretations of historic photographs featuring early SBI students and the business school building.
The project was a collaboration between Florida SBDC at Florida A&M University School of Business and Industry and KCCI.
The inspiration grew from team member Tangela Lofton’s involvement with KCCI and a transformative trip to South Africa, where vibrant murals demonstrated the power of public art to celebrate history, culture, and community.
This meaningful project brings FAMU’s rich history to life while inspiring future generations of entrepreneurs and business leaders. Public art does more than beautify a space—strengthens how people feel about their community. A 2026 study published in the journal Cities found that murals significantly improve perceptions of neighborhood safety, cleanliness, and friendliness.
The new Dr. Sybil C. Mobley mural builds on this power of placemaking, transforming an entrance into a meaningful tribute that celebrates FAMU’s history, inspires future entrepreneurs, and fosters community pride. Read more research here.
Bringing the Mural Vision to Life
Once professional muralist Myah Freeman was selected and key stakeholders determined the vision, she provided sketches and designs for approval. Then, wall prep and painting began. Finally, the new mural was celebrated on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026 and attendees were impressed by the thoughtful artistic interpretation of Dr. Mobley.
