FDOT ordered Tallahassee to remove artistic crosswalks that improved traffic safety. Studies show these crosswalks reduce speeding and increase driver awareness.
Crosswalks to Classrooms effort reduced risk where people cross the street. High-visibility, patterned markings by schools, senior communities, and busy neighborhood crossings were privately funded and data proved they improved traffic compliance.
Locally, all artistic crosswalks are safety tools – pavement markings put in place to enhance safety. All the crosswalks in Leon County are apolitical, and for the ones where research was done, the research proved the enhance safety.
What began as a cheerful safety project by Leon County students – bright crosswalks splashed with color outside their schools – will be painted over this week, casualties of a state law cracking down on street art.
"The lights that you'll see later tonight, the planters, the bike racks, these are just a part of the invitation to bring you here," said Verlonda Johnson, KCCI Community Catalyst, mother and business owner.
