Years: 2026
Fort Braden School students and KCCI Catalysts picked up paintbrushes to help professional mural team Living Canvas Studio bring the “Rooted Together” mural to life near the historic Fort Braden Community Center.
Students also drew on mini canvases what “Rooted in our Community” means to them. These artworks are on display at the Fort Braden Library until November 14th.
In celebration the 100th anniversary of Old Fort Braden School and Fort Braden Community Center building, KCCI collaborated with Living Canvas Studio and Leon County Government to create the mural, titled “Rooted Together.” It honors community history and natural beauty. Cheers to being Rooted Together for the next 100 years!

Bringing the Mural to Life
The mural’s design was shaped through a collaborative community engagement process led by Living Canvas Studio. The artists gathered feedback from local residents, spent time observing Fort Braden’s distinctive natural landscapes, and explored the community. Three original mural concepts were developed and displayed at the local library, where residents voted for their favorite. The most popular concept served as the foundation for the final design. Featuring iconic local landmarks that were important to residents such as Old Fort Braden School, Lake Talquin, and surrounding recreational activities, the mural highlights the area’s unique character.
Key stakeholders approved the final design. Then, wall prep and painting began with students from Fort Braden School coming to help paint on Monday, October 26th. It was a great day for the students as they also had a chance to see Fully Booked at Fort Braden and attend a VIP tour of the library. A group “old timey” photo was taken and will be on display in the Community Center for the 100th anniversary celebration.
